Schedule
Classes are held Wednesday and Friday evenings from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM.
Location
The Columbia Dojo meets at the Owen Brown Interfaith Center, in Columbia Maryland. This is located at 7246 Cradlerock Way, Columbia, MD 21045.
Classes are typically in Room 150 (first floor), but are occasionally held in the sanctuaries on the second floor.
Bible Study/Devotions
Classes will include a brief time of Bible Study and/or prayer. You may wish to bring a Bible and notebook. Missing the Devotions may result in your being excused from future classes.
Physical Requirements
Classes begin with a light warm-up (15–20 minutes) that includes stretching and modest physical exercise to loosen the muscles. Sensei Carlos tailors both the warmup and the martial arts experience to individual students in class at any given time. The result is that most students are able to learn and participate regardless of age, physical condition, injury history, or other potential limitations. New students should wear comfortable workout clothes.
Tai Chuan Do Training
After exercises and a short break you will be instructed in the martial art of Tai Chuan Do. This is a well rounded style that includes katas or forms designed to train the body to execute various moves in succession. It also includes a variety of blocks, hand strikes, kicks, and numerous self-defense techniques. It is not possible to cover all of this material in one or two class periods, so your consistent attendance is necessary to learn all of the maneuvers and techniques, and to advance to higher levels.
What is Tai Chuan Do
Tai Chuan Do at its core is truly a mixed martial art. It incorporates a mix of traditional striking techniques from karate origins (such as Shorin-Ryu) with leverage based techniques from origins such as Aikido and Jujitsu. You can expect a combination of traditional forms (kata), kicking and hand strikes, and self defense techniques based on leverage and biomechanics.
Cost
There is no monetary fee, tuition, or other such registration cost associated with attending class. Equipment may be purchased through the instructor, but may also be purchased from other sources. Testing fees are collected as students advance to higher ranks
